Algeria is witnessing a heated debate over new requirements imposed by the Algerian interior ministry to issue new biometric passports and national identity cards. The new administrative procedures require that the photo ID should have a clear face photo. Under the requirement men have to shorten beards and the woman have to keep the
hijab behind the ears. The ministry said this system is important for international security, combating fraud and countering terrorism.
